Indie Film Suffragette Wages Its Own Campaign for Women's Rights 100 Years Later

This would appear to be an easy quiz, even if you have no head for statistics. Are the following numbers true in 1915 or 2015:

• Women make up 70 percent of the population living on less than $1 a day.
• 62 million girls don't go to school.
• 75 million girls under age 14 are child laborers.

If you answered 1915, as the youngsters did in the video below, you'd be wrong. That's current data. I don't know what's more heartbreaking—the figures themselves, or the shattered looks on those kids' faces when they find out the truth.

The video, from Los Angeles ad agency Zambezi, promotes the indie film Suffragette, set 100 years ago in London, with Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan playing pioneers in the battle for women's voting rights. There's been plenty of progress since those stifling times, the video says, but there's still work to do when two out of every three people who can't read and write are women, and childbirth is the second leading cause of death of girls 15-19.

Two more words on the subject: pay gap. The digital short links to an Instagram campaign, #HopeForOurDaughters, and asks people to post their wishes for the next generation of women. Focus Films, the studio distributor of Suffragette, will donate $1 to Equality Now for every post.
