Matthew Frost is the filmmaker behind delightful satires like Lizzy Caplan's sendup of pretentious hipster clichés. Now, he's getting a taste of his own medicine, thanks to a tongue-in-cheek profile on him and his work.
Frost's portfolio also includes short clips starring actresses like Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain and Kirsten Dunst, poking fun at contemporary pop culture—namely, what happens when a general obsession with Hollywood meets everyone being glued to their smartphones all the time. The new video lifts various techniques from his films, analyzing and deflating them as it turns the camera on Frost to discuss his life, which consists largely of waiting around in dog parks and failing to throw himself a birthday party.
In other words, it's mostly fun, and a little educational, part of a series from The Creator Class, a lifestyle channel created by FREE aimed at artists. Directed by Adam Beck and Paul Johnston, it hangs together even at eight-and-a-half minutes thanks to great little details—a frowning sunflower in the background—and Frost's self-deprecating charm, with extra points for a balls-to-the-wall karaoke rendition of R.E.M's "Everybody Hurts."
The video's title, "Content with Content," might be a little too arch to do the, well, contents justice. But the clip itself is a great introduction to the subtle humor of Frost's other videos—they're certainly worth watching, for anyone who's into that kind of thing. (Check some out below.) And anyone who isn't can at least count on getting to see some celebrities.
